Today was the first meeting of my speech class. Everyone had to give an impromptu speech about his or herself. My assignment now is to post a blog of a self evaluation of my first speech. First, and I hope I'm not shooting myself in the foot, I will evaluate the class as a whole. As a group, I think the speeches were not presented well. Before the speeches began, Professor Kinsley stated habits of bad public speakers. These included saying filler words like "um" and "like". She also pointed out that eye contact should be made with the entire audience and fidgeting should be kept to a minimum.
Most of my classmates did not seem to take into consideration what the Professor stated. In fact many wouldn't even speak for the full minitue minimum. Also, much of the audience were distracting and interrupting.
As far as my speech. I made the class, particularly the professor aware that I am trying to earn an A. I said this mainly because I was wearing a hat and I noticed notes were being taken by the professor. I had a feeling that appearance would be taken into consideration, and later in the class, she did say that it will be. I tried to fly with the hat since another student did. Plus, I really need a haircut. I feel that I would do a better job with the hat since I'd be more comfortable.
I think that I did I god job other than the fact that I was rambling. I wish I would have thought about what I wanted to say more before I spoke. Also, I was not nervous but had to take a deep breath at the beginning. I would have sounded shaky unless I relax and take a deep breath before beginning. It's sort of an involuntary thing.
