I think continuous improvement, a concept identified in the text, is TQM. Continuous improvement means that the organization is always striving to improve. Regularly, all aspects of operations are analyzed. The goal is to reach perfection.
The PDCA cycle is a form of continuous improvement. PDCA stands for Plan-Do-Check-Act. 1st: identify what needs to be improved. 2nd:test the plan. 3rd: check that the plan is working. 4th: implement the plan.
Application of continous improvement for a manufacturing firm would be to use time function mapping to reduce the number of days that it takes to produce a product.
I applied continous improvement when I managed a restaurant. It's located near Madison Square Garden on busy 34th Street, so we were often hit hard with a rush of customers. Although the cashiers were able to ring in the orders quickly, the customer service needed to be improved. So cashiers began using scripts- a poka yoke, to improve the quality of customer service.
