The LMX, leader-member exchange model, is pretty interesting when applying it to a totally virtual environment.
This theory states that leaders have different relationships w/ different subordinates. Form the onset, this model seems to link management & favoritism. Regardless of the reason for the differing relationhips, the performance and satisfaction of the group as a whole is impacted.
In an online environment, there should be less members classified as out-group from the get go since the leader cannot rely on personal compatibility as much as w/in traditional settings. (unless he knows the members beforehand). In groups still may form if some subordinates do not communicate & play their part.
To maintain & improve interpersonal relationships, the All Channels communication network should be used; everyone should be copied on all "business" emails. A leader should attempt to make the group as cohesive as possible. Goals should be set and progress reports given. Also a human touch should be given to the online environment to make up for the lack of grapevines & "lunch room chatter"
