Expanding to a global workforce can make or break a firm's JIT system & competitive advantage.
The workforce- or as listed in attached article "Organizational Culture and Conditions" are one of five major constraints to JIT systems.
Employees must work at their best in order for JIT to work and they also have to be be given trust, responsibility, and authority. This is much different that US management practices back in the day.
The article also refers to Japan's current issues with JIT. The well educated are loosing interest in blue collar jobs and are going to more white collar jobs. This impacts quality & productivity.
The other constraints upon JIT that are described in the article are:
- customer driven & economic conditions
- logistics
-intractable accounting & finance practices
-small supplier difficulties
